The epic battle between President Mokgweetsi Masisi and his predecessor, General Ian Khama, has apparently extended to the realm of academia.
In late 2015, Konkuk University in South Korea awarded Khama an honorary Doctorate of Political Science during a four-day state visit that the latter made to the Asian nation. At the time of the visit, Botswana was in talks with South Korea to acquire jet fighters and it has been suggested that the honorary PhD was meant to sweeten the deal. Thereafter, the Permanent Secretary to the President, Carter Morupisi, released a savingram providing guidance on nomenclature that had to be used on account of this development.
