Botswana signs billion-Pula deal with China amid Madibelatlhopho pushback

Botswana has signed a significant economic and technical cooperation agreement worth P1.1 billion with China despite recent calls from the activist movement Madibelatlhopho for lawmakers to distance themselves from Beijing’s influence.

The agreement which was signed this week by Vice President and Minister of Finance Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe on behalf of Botswana underscores the continued strengthening of economic ties between the two nations. Representing China in the signing was Fan Yong, the Chinese Ambassador to Botswana. The deal is expected to inject substantial financial and technical resources into Botswana’s development agenda.
