Boxing launches its own Local Organising Committee

The Botswana Boxing Association (BOBA) has launched its own Local Organising Committee (LOC) to coordinate its events.

The committee, which will be chaired by former Botswana Integrated Sports Association (BISA) Publicity Secretary, Tapiwa Mokoka, was launched this past Thursday at Yarona Country lodge.

The committee, which is said to have started its work in January this year, will be expected to coordinate among others, the upcoming 2011 Debswana Boxing Awards, the 2011 Botswana President Cup and the Night of Legends as well as oversee BOBA’s social responsibility initiatives among others. Speaking at the launch of the LOC, BOBA’s Vice President ÔÇô Administration, Lawrence Akanyang said the committee was formed ‘in order to facilitate all activities of fundraising for boxing.’

“Their main task is to organize, market and facilitate all fundraising activities for 2011. They will organize the Debswana Boxing awards (to be held on May 28th), the Botswana President’s Cup (23rd July), Night of the Legends Box and Dine (on 30th September) and any other activity that the Boxing board may deem necessary to assign them to undertake,” Akanyang said when officially launching the committee.

On issues of social responsibility, the BOBA vice president (Administration) said the association has enacted a marketing and sponsorship plan to ‘enhance and initiate a social responsibility aspect.’

“Since 1975, when BOBA was incepted, never have we undertaken any activity of social responsibility. While as Botswana boxing we have amassed international and regional stardom in medal harvesting, not much was done for the society we live in,” Akanyang said when explaining why they decided to form the LOC to look into social responsibility initiatives.

The LOC is comprised of nine members, three of whom are members of the BOBA executive committee.
Apart from Mokoka, who is the chairperson, other members are Tiro Lepotokisi and Mpho Masome (Logistics and Accreditation), Willoughby Kemoen and Marx Nthusang (Administration), Kgosi Silas and Bond Ngubula (Marketing and Sponsorship), Frank Chigutshi (Finances) while Tshepiso Letshwiti is the LOC’s Communications and Promotions Officer.

Speaking in a separate interview, the LOC chairperson, Mokoka said the committee had already started as early as January this year. She described the LOC as a very capable team, chosen according to each individual’s commitment to sport in the country. Mokoka says as part of their social responsibility initiative mandate, they will be looking for ways to help the needy in the community.

“We will be going outside Gaborone to identify areas and people who will be targeted for this initiative. The plan will also be to market BOBA,” Mokoka said. The LOC Chairperson further added that the LOC’s term of office will run concurrently with that of the current BOBA executive committee.
