Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is on a manhunt following reports that a suspect swindled an Asian businessman cash amounting to P1 million. The incident took place after the suspect claimed to be the owner of a piece of land in Kgatleng District.

Information gathered by the publication indicates that a well known businessman collapsed after he was swindled close to P1 million when trying to buy a piece of land in Mmamashia. Though is not yet clear how much the land was sold for, it is suspected that the unscrupulous dealer demanded around P3m which the buyer was willing to part with in order to purchase the piece of land. It is reported that the businessman later realised that he was cheated and went to report the matter to the police. The suspect has since disappeared.

Deputy Director of CID Kesetsenao Tshweneitsile has confirmed that the CID is investigating a case in which a certain Asian businessperson was allegedly swindled of about P1m by a bogus land broker who is still at large. “We are on a manhunt for the alleged suspect whose whereabouts are still not yet known. The investigators are all out to track down the suspect and we are hopeful that sooner or later he will be apprehended” he said.

He explained that the businessperson who also owns a private school met with the alleged land owner who claimed that he owns a piece of land somewhere in Mmamashia.

He said during the discussion the businessman expressed interest in buying the land and was asked to pay a P1 million deposit.

“I am not in a position to state how much the land was sold except that we have so far established that the businessman paid a deposit of P1m to the alleged land dealer,” he said.
