Crime higher than this time around last year

According to Botswana Police at least six people died in 247 separate road traffic accidents recorded by the police this past week.
The weekly report states that a total of 14 people have already died in road traffic accidents since the beginning of the year as compared to 11 recorded during the same period last year.
In other related offences, the police have charged 864 motorists for excessive speed out of 2197 cases of traffic violation in the past week. A breathalyzer test for alcohol was conducted on 142 motorists and seven of them have been charged for driving under the influence of alcohol whilst 29 others were booked for using hand held mobile phones whilst driving.
Four murder incidents were recorded during the week, and two of the suspects have been arrested. One committed suicide whilst the others are still at large. Since the beginning of the year, nine murder cases were recorded compared to five recoded during the same period last year.
The police have also recorded 27 armed robbery cases in which cash amounting to over P27 000.00 and property valued at over P64 000.00 were stolen.
Out of the 27 armed robbery cases reported, four involved the use of handguns, 16 involved knives, and the rest involved various weapons. This brings the numbers of armed robbery cases reported since the beginning of the year to 49 compared to 50 recorded during the same period in 2006.
The police also recorded 34 rape cases in which 19 suspects were arrested for 18 of the cases. Since the beginning of the year 68 cases were reported compared to 53 reported during the same period in 2006.
Still in the past week, nine motor vehicles were reported stolen and seven of them were recovered abandoned. A total 15 motor vehicles were reported stolen since the beginning of the year compared to 16 reported during period in 2006.
