Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) investigations have exposed a big syndicate of land mafia involving criminal gangs and Land board officials across Botswana.
The DCEC which has just completed investigating corruption against the Tawana Land Board, Mogoditshane Land Board and Kgatleng Land Board recently warned that the land issue presents a clear and present danger to Botswana’s peace and economic stability.
Making a presentation to the 60th Public Accounts Committee recently, DCEC acting Director General, Tshepo Pilane revealed how this mafia is operating a shadow land allocation complex complete with fake land certificates, sometimes with the help of land board officials. He also revealed how 29 Mogoditshane Sub Land board members and officials used inside information to arrogate 120 plots to themselves and an undisclosed amount in cash while the waiting list of applicants seeking allocation in Mogoditshane stood at 140 000, dating back as far back as 1993/94.
