Dikoloti makes history as first victorious independent candidate for Parley

Archival records at the Independent Electoral Commission will show that Nehemiah Modubule was the first successful independent candidate for Parliament. However, records at the Lobatse Police Station and the Botswana National Front office in Gaborone will show applications for rally permits that Modubule, as a supposed independent candidate, made in his own name as well as complaints by the party Secretary General, Mohammad Khan, regarding Modubule’s continued to use BNF’s songs, chants, slogans and colours. On the other hand, there was no “however” in the case of Dr. Edwin Dikoloti when he cut all ties with the Botswana Democratic Party to run as an independent candidate for the Goodhope-Mmathethe parliamentary seat in this year’s general election. Notwithstanding clear deviation from the norm, Modubule has publicly claimed the crown when he addressed a political rally in Mochudi in November 2017.
