A 30-year-old man, Spencer Mkandapi, from Zimbabwe’s Bulawayo township of Magwegwe, was this Friday arraigned before the Urban Customary Court President, Kgosi Dikwalo Monametsi, charged with assault common under Section 246 of the penal code. He pleaded guilty to the charges.
The complainant, Marclatty Pitse, 36, who is unemployed and from Phalane Ward in Mochudi, told the court how the accused assaulted her.
Mkandapi, who works as a driver at Office Deport, was arrested on September 4, 2006 at Partial for assaulting his girlfriend, after having a misunderstanding.
State Prosecutor from Central Police Station, Constable Ditiro Phirinyane, told the court that assault cases in their areas are increasing by the day and are stretching police manpower to the limit. He urged the court to punish the accused so that others can learn from him.
Before passing the sentence, Kgosi Monametsi told the court that what the accused did can take him to jail for up to three years.
He sentenced him to four strokes on the bum and six months in prison, wholly suspended for three years.
