End of the road for Zakhem and Gaborone United

It’s only a matter of time before construction mogul Nicholas Zakhem bids farewell to Gaborone United, a team he has been financing for close to 10 years. Reports reaching Sunday Standard indicate that Zakhem has fallen out with his onetime bosom friends at GU, amid mounting infighting among the team’s top brass, which culminated in a case being filed before court.

GU insiders have revealed that Zakhem doesn’t see eye to eye with some members of the previous and current executive committee and has since decided to bid the club that he led to glory adieu. The relationship is said to be so tense that it is even disruptive to the daily operations of the team. The internal jostling between the top brass has resulted in a slump in performance, as Gaborone United is currently out of contest for league honours and was long knocked out of the Mascom Top Eight tournament
However, Zakhem will not be lost to football as he is already in talks with a number of clubs among them Gilport Lions and Notwane. While he dismissed talk of his impending exit from GU as rumours, Zakhem did admit that he was in talks with a number of teams regarding his future in football.

“What I can tell you is that I’ m currently weighing my options and still talking to some teams. I am in serious talks with Notwane. Who knows, we might agree on something.  Regarding my situation at Gaborone United, I can only say it’s just rumours. If I leave I will let you know,” he said.

However, GU insiders have revealed that Zakhem has already made up his mind as he is just winding up his business at the club.

“The man has made up his mind and is definitely on his way out. Don’t be surprised if he announces his exit just before the end of the season. It’s a shame because Zakhem really loves Gaborone United and he was very passionate about it, but the way things have been unfolding has made his stay untenable,” said our sources.

Zakhem is also rumoured to be courting Gilport Lions, a team headed by long time friend Kelisitse Gilika. A number of Premier League teams are also reported to be trying to lure him to their side.
