As three of his successors, President Sir Seretse Khama was born in the deceptively named Bechuanaland Protectorate – which was actually governed like a colony. The successors are Sir Ketumile Masire, Festus Mogae and Mokgweetsi Masisi. The third and Khama’s own son, Lieutenant General Ian Khama, was born during the Bechuanaland years but far away in Surrey, England. While they were born at different times as well as in different places and continents, they all became founder residents of Botswana’s first elite enclave – Extension 5 in Gaborone. For the first time in history, Botswana has a president who was born after the Republic of Botswana came into being.
