The railway line has for many decades dominated the transport system in and out of Gaborone. Gaborone Station became the epicenter of all things transport. This has been a combination of a bus and railway station adjacent to each other.
The station development was rudimentary and somewhat informal. There were women that plied in cooked food and they were known as bommaseapei. These women were usually rough and loud as they conducted their business. It was the in-thing for one to come to the capital town and not leave without eating dumplings with stew.
As much as the railway carried more people than any other transport system into Gaborone, there was an auxiliary for it as road transport. There was the railway bus. This was an interesting bus from the 1940s and it had wooden seats. There were two famous characters who worked as bus drivers. It was Rathedi Motlhooeme and a certain Sejabodila.
