There is no doubt who is the toast of the Sasol Eight Nations Group Matches held in South Africa. Botswana Under 23 coach, Major David Bright, is striding along the touchlines of the chilly and noisy Eldorado Park Stadium, dismissing some of the world’s best footballing nations with intimidating power and imposing the Botswana side as overwhelming favorites to win the tournament.
It was widely assessed by the pundits in pre-tournament predictions that South Africa, Cameroon and China would battle it out for the two semi-final places earmarked from their group, with Botswana no more than making up the numbers.
Instead, Botswana have left their more fancied rivals red-faced and remorseful after shading Cameroon 1-0 and then bludgeoning China 4-0 on Friday to assure a semifinal berth – while the three other teams in the group must now battle for the one remaining semi-final berth open to them.
With two wins from two matches the Botswana Under 23 football team today stands formidably on top of the tournament log table ahead of South Africa, China, and Cameroon. Major Bright’s boys were nimble and quick compared to the towering Cameroonians, and what they lacked in size they made up for in fighting spirit. Botswana has already qualified for the semi final round of the tournament and will only turn up for their date with South Africa today (Sunday) merely to honour the fixtures.
