If someone were to say this to you, you might consider looking for new friends, and rightfully so. Even very young children can correctly identify this as bullying. Nevertheless, a lot of us speak this way to ourselves. Engaging in such denigrating self talk could indicate that you, like 7 out of 10 people, experience imposter syndrome – a faulty belief system wherein one chronically doubts their abilities in spite of rivaling external evidence.
University of Botswana Senior Social Work lecturer, Poloko Ntshwarang says, “when someone has impostor syndrome, they experience repeated feelings or thoughts that they are incompetent or not good enough, despite evidence to the contrary.”
