The Law Society of Botswana (LSB) has expressed concerns about the state of the judiciary in Botswana and threatens to boycott the opening of the legal year.
LSB says the image of the judiciary and the public confidence in this arm of the State are at an all-time low, with applications by judges being filed against the CJ, allegations of judges receiving bribes from parties, and some judges writing judgments for others. “It is a truly deplorable situation, and we believe it is time for the Law Society to take strong steps to express our displeasure with the status quo of the Administration of Justice for the good of the institution and the public that it serves.”
Among other issues, the council has raised concerns over the collapse of the judicial case management system. The system has reportedly been dysfunctional for years, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the country’s legal processes.
