Once a hardcore Botswana National Front (BNF) marxist, former Member of Parliament Akanyang Magama has joined the Botswana Congress Party (BCP).
Magama is also former BNF Secretary General as well as a former Member of Parliament for the Gaborone South constituency.
Magama’s arrival into the BCP’s bandwagon has been confirmed by the party’s spokesperson, Taolo Lucas.
“He was issued with a life membership card this week,” revealed Lucas in a brief interview with The Telegraph.
Lucas said that he is positive that Magama would in BCP find a compatible political home.
“The BCP is a social democratic party and he will find resonance within the party as a new cadre,” he stated.
He said that his party is delighted to have Magama within its fold by reason of the fact he is an experienced politician.
“Magama was Secretary General of the BNF, MP for five years and at one point a leader of the Opposition….he brings a world of experience of party administration, experience on parliamentary matters a lot of experience on politics generally,” asserted the BCP spokesman.
“We believe he will be a great resource as we move into the future,” he added.
Lucas also disclosed that his party was in talks with former BNF chairman, Harry Mothei.
Magama and Mothei quit the BNF central committee following a clash with the Duma Boko leadership.
“It may be worth noting that we are talking to Harry Mothei and hope our discussion will yield results,” he said.
Magama, along with a former Botswana Democratic Party(BDP) youth activist, Chillyboy Rakgare, will officially be welcome into the BCP at a press conference to be held on Thursday.
