A young man of Mosetse Village last week allegedly went on a rampage at a funeral, burning 10 houses, killing a policeman, shooting two people and finally shooting himself to death.
Dukwi Police station commander, Superintendent Moyontjena Nkhori, on Monday said that they received a report that a certain young man was becoming a public nuisance at a funeral.
“While on the way to investigate, we heard a report that the suspect had burnt seven houses,” he said.
He said that indeed they found the houses burnt, with the suspect nowhere to be found. They later received a tip that the suspect was hiding at his girlfriend’s house.
When they arrived at the house, the suspect opened fire on them, injuring one of the police officers. The officer was certified dead on arrival at Nyangabwe Referral Hospital in Francistown.
“The suspect escaped and allegedly shot two people who are still recovering at Nyangabwe Hospital,” said Nkhori.
The search for the suspect continued the whole of Saturday. They later received another tip that the suspect had returned to Mosetse, and that he had burnt two more houses.
The Botswana Defense Force (BDF) and the Special Support Group (SSG) were called in to reinforce the patrol team and they later managed to locate the suspect and cornered him. On realizing that there was no way out, the suspect turned his gun on himself. By then he had already burnt another house, bringing the total number of houses that he had burnt to ten.
“Such kind of incidents are very rare in our areas of operation,” said Khori.
