After two weeks of evading police arrest, Charles Lekoko Mpejane, a middle aged man of Tonota Village in the Central District, was recently nabbed by the police in connection with the death of his lover who was allegedly set alight and burnt to ashes in her house in Madisakwane Ward in Tonota Village.
According to the Assistant Superintendent of Tonota Police Station, Bigboy Nkhwanana, who is in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), they were reported of a case in which a woman was allegedly set alight until she burnt to ashes two weeks ago.
“We were reported of such incident and the suspect escaped and we only arrested him recently at the Fule Cattle post, a few kilometers from the Tonota Village,” Superintendent Nkhwanana revealed in a telephone interview with the Sunday Standard.
Nkhwanana further said that the suspect had been remanded by the Francistown Magistrate Court where he will appear for his first mention next week, adding that what could have caused the incident is still a mystery to the police as the investigations are still on-going.
He pointed out that they, as the police, suspect that the perpetrator could have committed the crime due to a misunderstanding in their relationship.
“These types of incidents are very rare in our area, apart from other forms of killings by lovers,” he stated.
Nkhwana told the Sunday Standard that it is a pity that when people have problems with their lovers, they do not seek counseling, but rather they try to resolve it by taking the law into their own hands.
