Mompe Applauded for Standing for Continental Cycling Body Elections

The Botswana Cycling Association (BCA) is aiming to write its own piece of history by having its own member in the African Cycling management committee. BCA Secretary General, Game Violet Mompe is vying for a position in the Confederation of African Cycling (CAC).

BCA believes that Mompe’s election would be crucial for the growth of cycling both locally and across the continent. According to BCA President Kagiso Potongwane, “Mompe’s nomination is a testament to her dedication, leadership, and commitment to the development of cycling in Botswana and beyond. Her candidacy places Botswana on the map, representing our nation at the highest levels of African cycling governance.”

The local cycling association is optimistic that her success in the upcoming elections will propel the ambitions of Botswana’s cycling community and raise its profile on the international stage.

Mompe’s decision to stand for elections in the continental cycling controlling body is said to align well with the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) vision 2028. The vision emphasizes the importance of local sporting federations having representation in international bodies to foster growth and development within the country’s sports.

Representation in these influential positions is seen as vital for advocacy and enhancing the country’s standing globally. Potongwane highlighted the importance of the CAC Congress, noting that it offers an opportunity to set the strategic direction of the confederation, elect new leaders, and strengthen collaboration among member federations.

Mompe is a well-known figure in the local sports community, having held several significant positions within the BCA, the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC), and the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC). She currently serves as a member of the BNOC Safeguarding Committee, a member of the BNSC Elections Committee, and the Chairperson of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 ROC, among other roles. In addition, she volunteers at sporting events, where she contributes to organization and protocol.

In other cycling news, BCA athletes Nonofo Maswabi and Gomolemo Kelaotswe are currently in Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa, for the UCI training camp under the UCI Development Program. The camp, supported by the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture of the Republic of South Africa, focuses on road cycling and is expected to provide the two athletes with valuable knowledge and experience for upcoming events. They are set to compete in the 5-day Tour du Cap and the Cape Cycle Tour. The BCA hopes for improved performances from the athletes following this training camp.
