MoPR maintained at 2.4%

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of Botswana last week maintained the Monetary Policy Rate (MoPR) at 2.4 percent. This was after the bank slashed the rate by a 25 basis points in December 2023. The December move was the first cut since August 2022 when the bank had previously opted to increase the rate.

This past Thursday, the bank governor Cornelius Dekop said the MPC recognises that the economy is expected to operate below full capacity in the short term and, therefore, not generate demand-driven inflationary pressures.

The Ministry of Finance projects Botswana’s economic growth to accelerate to 4.2 percent and 5.4 percent in 2024 and 2025, respectively.
