Ever since its establishment in 2008, the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) has frequently made headlines for the wrong reasons. It has become Botswana’s most controversial state security institution. From its inception, the DIS has presented itself as a “big brother” to other state security agencies, interfering in the work of the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) in matters involving alleged corrupt practices, and intruding into investigations conducted by the Botswana Police Service in cases of suspected criminal activity. It appears that the only institution beyond its reach was the Botswana Defence Force (BDF).
