Pula! – Botswana headed for a wet rainy season

With the forecasted La Niña phenomenon on the verge of edging out the strong El Niño that is ravaging southern Africa, Batswana may soon be chanting PULA!

In a country that is home to much of the Kalahari Desert, where rain is very scarce, Pula which is the Botswana national motto/salute, literally translates to rain. It however means more than just “rain”. It represents life itself, happiness, good health and prosperity, as well as warm greetings or warm welcome and bon voyage.

So valuable is this weather condition – considered a watery inconvenience in other parts of the world – that the Botswana national currency is also called the Pula.
