Rogue elephant kills Shakawe man

A 50 year old man from Shongoshongo cattle post near Shakawe was this week attacked and killed by a rogue elephant. People in the whole of Ngamiland district are said to be living in fear, as they are terrorized by wild animals which roam the area, damaging ploughed fields and other property along the way.

Shakawe Station Commander Superintendent Goitsemodimo Molapisi said the police were called to the scene at 9:30 pm on Tuesday where they found the deceased in a pool of blood, and buried under a pile of tree branches, supposedly by the same elephant. He had injuries all over the body and was rushed to Shakawe clinic where he was certified dead upon arrival.

“We were told by his 38 year old neighbour who had accompanied him to the fields that they had been on alert that evening, waiting to scare the elephants away. But as soon as they approached it, the elephant charged at both of them as they tried to flee. The neighbour was however fortunate to survive the attack”, said Molapisi. Efforts to reach the District Wildlife Coordinator for comment proved futile as he was said to be out of his duty station on official duties.
