About a month ago, Mpho Sebina shared a quote on Facebook by Richelle E. Goodrich; ‘The Earth provides us a brand new beginning every twenty-four hours. It is a repeated invitation to breathe in the cool morning air and start afresh; to mimic the sunrise and brighten up while reaching once more for the sky; to carry a glad song in our heart like the early birds; and as faithfully as the morning dew, to wash off the dust from yesterday.’ I have been paying close attention to her purely because she is one singer who simply stands behind a microphone and captivates. However, it is evident judging by the kind of material she reads that there is far more to her than just being a singer.
“Anything is possible, I believe you can achieve whatever it is that you set your heart and mind to achieving,” said Sebina. The 26-year-old singing sensation, an unsurpassed songwriter has an Honours in International Business from Multimedia University in Melaka, Malaysia. After attaining her degree, she landed herself a job at Voodoo Advertising as an Accounts Executive and all was well and good. But one day as she was hanging out with her friends, she started and her friends gave her a positive response which resulted in her quitting her job. She said that was the beginning of a journey guided by the woman within her.
Raised as a sister to 5 siblings, Sebina speaks so fondly of her family with so much gratitude especially to her parents. She said her mum and dad have always been loved and respected in all the little communities they have belonged to. “My family has grounded and groomed me into the woman that I am. My siblings and I have parents who continuously support us through our little endeavours. They listen to my music all the time and that reassures me each time,” she said.
Her parents raised her in several towns but the one she remembers most is Sua Town. “I love to reminisce over a bitter sweet day back in my childhood when I got lost. A kind woman saw me crying by the bus stop and asked me whose child I was. She took me to my parents,” she said. Sebina learnt from such a tender age the value of living and earning people’s respect in every community. She said she still carries the same virtues which have kept her ever so humbled through her music career.
Sebina is also a show stopper in the kitchen! Apart from music she also has a passion for food and fashion and sees these as possible avenues into which she could venture into God willing. “Each time I cook for my friends and family I get a ‘wow!’ and I am encouraged to keep at it, after all I am what I eat and I am also what I wear,” she attested.
“My message is love; you know that unconditional love that stands for compassion, respect, forgiveness, charity and so on. Not necessarily just love between man and woman. I mean the kind of love that if we could have in our hearts, peace could so easily come about,” Sebina said. In her very first single ‘Loves light’ which is currently taking over the airwaves, she speaks with an emotion so great and intense that she sings for love, she sings for joy and most importantly she sings for you!
