As a way to encourage exercise and healthy living more and more fitness experts are turning to music and dance as a way to make exercise a lot more bearable and attractive.
With the cold season now behind us more people are looking to burn off the extra fat and shed a few kilos. It’s a race to get the best body before the summer kicks into full gear. What better way than to dance your way to fitness. “Through my training programme I want to promote fitness training as something fun to do,” says trainer Obert Morgan of Obertfitness. Morgan operates corporate gym classes at BNPC, FNB, and BITRI. “Lack of fitness affects productivity in the workplace,” he says. Morgan was also recently engaged by the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) to do a public aerobathon at the National Stadium as part of their CSR initiatives.
A University of Botswana (UB) Physical Education graduate, 43-year-old Morgan has also worked for the Botswana Defence Force (BDF). He resigned from the army to work on a cruise ship in the US where he was identified by a manager at Equinox celebrity gyms in Miami.
“While on board the cruise ship I was identified by one the managers for Equinox celebrity gyms and he gave me an offer to work in Miami,” Morgan says. “I came back to Botswana to prepare my paper work and went back to US to work and study physical training.”
In 2010, he came back home to start his own business in fitness with his own personal savings. That was when Obertfitness was born.
He says being in the fitness industry has awarded him the opportunity to give back to the community. In May this year he hosted a free fitness event for the public featuring some of the best instructors from Botswana and South Africa. In August he hosted another free event for BSE which attracted more than 2 000 participants. Four days later he hosted another free event as part of a build-up to the annual Inter Banks games.
Morgan says he will be hosting a two-day aerobathon on September 9 and 10 at Baisago University with a line-up of some of the best local and international fitness instructors.
“This event is geared at celebrating Botswana’s 50th anniversary as the patrons are encouraged to come dressed in national colours.” He says the event will feature 16 fitness instructors from across the region.
