Soweto’s Influence on Gaborone at Independence

In 1964 when the country was charting its way from Bechuanaland Protectorate to the Republic of Botswana, major plans were underway to create what we now know as the seat of Government. Gaborone was to be built from scratch. Unlike other capitals like Lusaka and Lilongwe, there was absolutely nothing where you now find this city that is now almost a metropolis. 

Before 1964, what existed was the Village Camp and the railway station. The Village was a collection of an old police camp, a prison, a primary school, a few houses that belonged to the colonial civil service and a conglomeration of a few shops that served that community.
