Unitrans makes last-minute surrender to union

As perhaps their final official engagement for 2024, Unitrans Botswana and the Botswana Transport and General Workers Union were to appear before the Gaborone Industrial Court. However, a day before that happened, the South African-origin trucking company gave in to the Union’s demands. The result is that the shift structure used by the former’s employees, who are also the latter’s members, remains unchanged.

One of Unitrans’ main clients is Khoemacau Copper Mining – which operates one of the largest underground copper mines in the world. The service agreement between the two parties stipulates that Unitrans shall deliver 10 000 tonnes of ore on a daily basis. Resultantly, the trucking company has despatched employees (who work two eight-hour shifts between six in the morning and 10 at night) to the mine. These employees are BTGWU members.
