A 27 year old man of Botshabelo ward in Maun who is a key suspect in the murder of a 22 year old woman is expected to appear before court today (Tuesday) charged with murder. The woman who was a police volunteer based in Maun, had reportedly gone missing since 27th July and had never been seen until her badly decomposed body was discovered on Saturday morning by a herd boy.
According to Officer Commanding number five district Senior Superintendent Peter Gochela, the deceased’s body was in a very bad state to a point that a post mortem exercise had to be performed at the scene of crime. The result is that she had to be buried on the same day. “Police pathologists flew in from Gaborone on Sunday morning for the postmortem, after which the body was quickly ferried to Moeti graveyard for immediate burial,” he said.
“It was in a very bad state, and so the family decided to bury it right away. This is without doubt an act of passion killing as the two were reported to have been lovers.”
He noted that since the beginning of January to date, his policing area has recorded a total of five passion killings, one in Shakawe, three in Maun and another at Phuduhudu settlement near Gweta. In all of these, he said both the victims and the perpetrators are young people aged below the age of thirty. He advised men to learn to respect women whenever they want out of a relationship.
“It is also evident that men have too much anger and jealousy within themselves which they find hard to manage. They cannot contain themselves and so this behavior will lend them into serious trouble,” said Gochela.
He called for concerted efforts from the district leadership as well as Non Governmental Organizations and also to be proactive and come forward to assist the police in their quest to curb all forms of crimes in the district.
In another incident, a 46 year old Seronga woman reportedly met her untimely death while on duty at a veterinary gate along Sehitwa-Ghanzi road just before Kuke village. Gochela said the gate keeper woman was hit by a speeding Volvo car and died on the spot. The driver only sustained minor injuries. He said investigations on the matter are ongoing.
