Former Channel O Africa Music award winner, Game “Zeus” Bantsi, has once again been nominated for this year’s 9th continental award-winning ceremony, which will be broadcast live on November 17th from Walter Sisulu Square, Johannesburg, on Channel O.
Since its inception, Batswana Artists, Mista Doe, Acid, Scar and Zeus, have had the privilege of taking home an award for their respective music videos.
“The channel O awards follow music submissions to the channel, which are then played to the rest of Africa,” Tshepo Maphanyane, the Communications Manager at Multichoice Botswana, told The Telegraph.
Taking into consideration that there are a total of 14 categories for the awards and the strides that Batswana have made in the music industry, having only one nominee from Botswana, has been perceived as relatively low and the president of the Botswana Music Union (BOMU), Alfredo Mosimanegape, blames it on the local artists for not being proactive when it comes to events of this nature.
Mosimanegape said that, as a union, BOMU tries to make their membership take advantage of such opportunities and try their best to encourage them to participate but the artists remain reluctant and complacent to venture into the international music arena.
Local entertainment guru, Zenzele Hirschfeldt of Zen Promotions, however, blames Multichoice Botswana for not putting in more effort into making local artists aware of such opportunities, like being a part of the Channel O Africa Music Video Awards. Hirschfeldt suggested that Multichoice should collaborate with BOMU and the Ministry of Youth Sports and Culture to create more hype and awareness to the local artist.
She attributed the low turnout of local nominees to the fact that not any videos have been released as yet since many of the local artists were banking on taking advantage of the festive season hype much later in the year.
“We continue (where possible) to encourage all those with a stake in the industry to do their bit in encouraging participation, from producing quality works to submitting their videos to the channel, to voting,” Maphanyane added.
Zeus has been nominated for his song, titled ‘Dancing Shoes’, under the category of Most Gifted African: South video.
To vote for him send a text message of his code (11D) to +27839208406 or other social sites MXit and Facebook. He finds himself against HHP for his hit single, Bosso, in this category.
