Masa Square Hotel in Gaborone recently hosted participants in Mmokolodi Nature Reserve as part of their Fashion Mentorship Programme ahead of the upcoming fashion show, scheduled for October 20 later this year. The fashion show is in its fifth installment while the mentorship programme is making only a second comeback after launching in 2017, this time under the theme ‘Fashion in the digital age’.
The programme was kick started by an hour long game drive through the resort from which the mentees were expected to gain inspiration, after which a quick 45 minute challenge was thrown their way. They had to sketch a design inspired by the game drive and let their imagination run wild, also to come up with a catchy hash tag to go with the sketch. Robert Mothapo was the challenge winner walking away with a weekend paid accommodation at Masa Square Hotel as well as a P500.00 meal voucher, runner up Keemenao Kenalemang walked away with a Samsung phone courtesy of 3G mobile while the third runner up Shato Gondo bagged herself a P500.00 meal voucher at Masa Square Hotel.
Didimalang Selemogo, a Fashion & Textile Design lecturer at Limkokwing University and also coordinator of this year’s mentorship said she was pleased to see the mentors and mentees working well together and fusing ideas perfectly. She said she believed the mentees were taking away a great deal of knowledge from their mentors and could not wait for the main event.
Asked on what she thought about Botswana’s fashion scene, she said there was still room for growth in the industry but with budding fashion designers like the mentees, the industry could go far. The main event is scheduled for October 20 2018.
