The Umbrella for Democratic Change couldn’t have had anything nice to say about the Court of Appeal (CoA) after it lost a case in which it sought to deploy election monitors to all election registration stations. Following the announcement of the verdict, its parliamentary leader, Dithapelo Keorapetse, stated that the verdict didn’t come as a surprise because the ruling party has stacked the courts with judges who protect its interests.
“We have long questioned the appointment of some of the High Court and Court of Appeal judges,” he said.
The case ended up at the CoA after the state (in the agency of the Independent Electoral Commission) appealed a decision by Justice Gaolapelwe Ketlogetswe that had greenlighted the monitoring of election registration by UDC.
