Will Shah stand for Rollers’ committee elections?

With only three weeks to go before their decisive Annual General Meeting (AGM), an intense campaign is now looming as Township Rollers warring factions start jostling for executive committee positions. While the Spencer Mmui led faction is yet to name their candidates to stand for elections, their foes, the Walter Kgabung led faction are already miles ahead and are rumoured to have already released their elections lobby list.

Immediately after the announcement of the much waited AGM, names of candidates for the Kgabung led faction, which will be campaigning under the moniker ‘Team Jagdish,’ started doing rounds. While the majority of the names bandied about as standing for positions will not raise eyebrows, at least two candidates for positions of Treasurer and the additional member positions will do. In what will come as a surprise to many, it is rumoured that Township Rollers’ current financier, Jagdish Shah, will stand for position of additional member during the elections while his employee at CA Sales, a certain Minkie will stand for the position of Treasurer. While the inclusion of Shah and the little known Minkie may come as a surprise, this should have been expected as the business tycoon seeks to tighten his grip on Rollers.

It is rumoured that given his popularity status as the team’s interim financier as well as a front runner to take over the team as its official financier, Shah’s inclusion was done to solidify his faction’s campaign. “Apart from Shah and the Treasurer candidate, almost all the other position are filled with familiar faces. Kgabung will stand for the Chairmanship, Khumoyame Masonya as Secretary General, Tshepiso Chelani as Vice Secretary General, Phempheretlhe Pheto as the Public Relations Officer while Edwin Dikoloti will stand for the other Additional Member position,” a source revealed. With the Mmui faction still to name their candidates, it is said ‘Team Jagdish’ is already on the campaign trail and have unleashed their financial muscle and the power of the social media.

Aside from using the facebook page Township Rollers (Bagaka), the faction is said to have sent Chelani on the campaign trail to solicit support from the general membership. Keen to secure the team for Shah, the ‘Team Jagdish’ is also drumming for support from the membership to support their ‘Hybrid Model’ of investment, which will see the team leased to an investor, in this case, Jagdish Shah. Concerning the other faction, the source revealed that as it stands, the Mmui led faction has not yet decided on who they will delegate to stand for elections. “I believe that most, if not all of the faction members, who are members of the current Interim Committee, will not stand for elections. There is need to freshen up the executive committee and the belief is that they will not be the best people to stand for office,” the source said. “This will be one of the most fiercely contested elections in the history of Rollers,” the source concluded.

Meanwhile, the team’s supporters, who last month wrote a letter to both Somerset Gobuiwang and Shah to lay their hands off the team, are said to be planning to press ahead with their plans to ensure the two desist from running the team. The concerned supporters want the two potential investors to hand over the running of the team, including its finances to the interim committee.
